Living on Miracle Street: Embracing Einstein's Two Perspectives on Life

Albert Einstein - quote on two perspectives on life

A few years back, I maintained a virtual diary of thoughts on Blogger. As I recently revisited these older posts, one entry about a quote, often associated with Albert Einstein, caught my eye. The quote states:

"THERE ARE ONLY TWO WAYS TO LIVE YOUR LIFE. ONE IS AS THOUGH NOTHING IS A MIRACLE. THE OTHER IS AS THOUGH EVERYTHING IS A MIRACLE."

This saying, with its depth of meaning and simple elegance, can significantly influence our lives, irrespective of whether we are delving into the complexities of quantum physics or embarking on a transformative journey as an academic career coach and writer.

The essence of this quote lies in the perspective it proposes. It encourages us to view the world in a way that can fundamentally alter our everyday experiences. Einstein, renowned for decoding the laws governing the physical world, suggests a deeply spiritual perspective: to regard the world and everything within it as miraculous.

  • The first perspective, seeing nothing as a miracle, could be considered a down-to-earth approach: It views life through the prism of cause and effect, devoid of any inherent wonder. Although this stance might seem devoid of magic, it promotes a logical understanding of our world, fostering a sense of clarity and pragmatism.

  • The second perspective promotes living with a perpetual sense of awe. Observing everything as a miracle cultivates a mindset of gratitude and marvel at our surroundings. The sunrise, the flight of a bird, a child's laughter - these ordinary events transform into captivating miracles, cultivating a profound appreciation for life's simplest moments.

These perspectives, while seemingly polar opposites are not incompatible. They represent two facets of the same reality, a reminder of the balance between the rational and the mystical, the understandable and the miraculous.

Even though this quote may reflect Einstein's thoughts on the interplay of science and spirituality, its reach extends far beyond the realm of scientific conversation. I see this profound saying as an invitation to live with purpose and intent, allowing ourselves the freedom to take risks, make mistakes, and relentlessly chase our ambitions in all areas of our lives, both personal and professional.

In choosing our outlook consciously, we have two options: we can meander through life, largely oblivious to its extraordinary beauty, or we can remain open to the miracles unfurling around us every day. At its heart, Einstein's insight invites us to truly inhabit the world, rather than just exist within it.

This quote dares us to take an ACTIVE ROLE IN OUR LIFE, to relish each moment as a unique wonder and to turn ordinary moments into a rich mosaic of miracles.
