- E-Portfolios: Encouraging Critical Thinking and Responsible AI Use
As AI models like GPT-4 are making such rapid progress, I've been looking into different methods to evaluate learning success in this AI era. Why don't we try e-portfolios instead of essays or tests the next time that I teach my introductory ecology course? What are E-portfolios? E-portfolios are digital collections of evidence that show a student's learning and development over time. They can take many forms, including: Developmental e-portfolios: used to track progress and reflect on learning throughout a course or program. Assessment e-portfolios: used to show achievement of learning outcomes or competencies. Showcase e-portfolios: used to showcase achievements and skills for employment or further education. Using e-portfolios gives a more in-depth view of student learning than traditional assessments or papers. E-portfolios give students the opportunity to evaluate their learning and growth, link distinct courses and experiences, and feel a greater sense of ownership of their learning. In addition, e-portfolios can assist instructors in assessing student learning in a genuine and all-encompassing way, and offer chances for peer comments and teamwork. E-portfolios can also be useful in addressing concerns around the overuse of AI resources by students. By requiring students to document their process and thinking throughout the project, we can better assess the extent to which students are relying on AI and how they are integrating AI into their learning. E-portfolios can also provide a platform for peer review and feedback, promoting responsible use of AI and encouraging students to think critically about the role of technology in their learning. As an example, I am planning to introduce an e-portfolio project (instead of the typical essay) in my introductory ecology course. The project will require students to create an e-portfolio that will include a series of interconnected artifacts showing their understanding of 4-5 major ecological topics (from different major sections of the course) examined during the semester. In their e-portfolio, students will need to include: Evidence of their learning and development throughout the course, reflections on key concepts and theories, and examples of assignments and activities that show their understanding of the 4-5 major concepts. Applying ecological concepts to real-world scenarios to enhance critical thinking and problem-solving. With the growing concern around the overuse of AI resources, I believe that e-portfolios may help to promote responsible use of technology and encourage students to think critically about their learning. Benefits Improved focus and organization, as goals provide structure and direction for your work. Increased motivation and a sense of accomplishment, as you work towards and achieve your goals. Better time management, as goals help you prioritize tasks and allocate your time effectively. SMART Technique Ready to apply the SMART technique to your academic writing project? Just follow these steps: Specific: Pin down your goal by being super clear about what you want to achieve. Skip the vague stuff. Instead of "write a manuscript," try "write a 15-chapter manuscript on how climate change messes with marine ecosystems." Measurable: Figure out a way to track your progress and see if you're winning. You could measure your progress by counting completed chapters or tracking the word count. Achievable: Make sure your goal is something you can actually pull off, considering your resources, know-how, and time. Think about whether you have the right knowledge, access to data, and enough time to get that manuscript done. Relevant: Check that your goal fits with your bigger academic and professional dreams. For example, if you're a marine biologist, the manuscript goal we talked about earlier is right up your alley. Time-bound: Give yourself a deadline to keep your focus sharp and motivation high. Be realistic and think about any obstacles that could mess with your schedule. For example, try setting a six-month deadline to finish your manuscript, including time for research, writing, and revisions. As someone who's been through the academic writing process, I truly believe that the SMART technique can be a game-changer for you. By setting achievable and well-defined goals, you'll have a personal roadmap to guide you through your academic writing journey. However, life has a way of evolving, and so do our perceptions of success. When I became a wife and mother, my priorities shifted. My family became the most important aspect of my life, and my definition of success changed. Being a loving spouse and a nurturing parent took precedence, and as a result, my idea of celebrations also transformed. I learned to embrace the little moments that make each of our lives unique - the moments spent with family and the milestones of personal growth. Interestingly, I found that it was easier to celebrate small successes related to family and personal life than those in my work life. Celebrating work-related achievements, particularly the smaller ones, can be tricky for a few reasons: 1. Societal norms: Society often emphasizes celebrating major milestones, such as publishing a paper or winning an award. As a result, smaller achievements might not be seen as "worthy" of celebration, even if they are meaningful to the individual. 2.
